LOOKING FOR AN EYE DOCTOR NEAR ME?

If you live in the Charleston metropolitan area, Brighter Outlook Vision is a vision clinic near you! Our vision center is a specialty eye care practice dedicated to helping people with vision issues that can’t be solved by glasses alone.

Many people think that perfect vision is being able to see 20/20, but we need over 20 skills to learn, read, pay attention, and live our lives unimpeded. We aren’t born knowing how to see the way adults do – we learn how to see over time. A developmental optometrist does a deeper dive into a person’s major vision skills beyond visual acuity to see how their eyes learned to work, and what can be done to fix them if they didn’t learn to work efficiently, or if they’re responding poorly to all the demand of screen time and near work we place on our eyes today.

We have to do a lot more than just open our eyes to truly see the world!

Our patients can have subtle symptoms that often aren’t considered, causing many of them to suffer their whole life thinking there’s nothing that can be done to help. But they don’t have to struggle.

At our specialty vision practice, we help people of all ages with:

👓Myopia (nearsightedness)

📚 Vision coordination problems that interfere with reading and learning

🧩 Visual processing disorders (poor spatial awareness, visual memory, letter reversals, among other skills)

👀 Amblyopia (lazy eye) and strabismus (crossed eyes)

🧠 Vision rehabilitation for vision problems resulting from head injury or stroke

We have a variety of tools to help with your eye care; including specialty lenses, prisms, CureSight, and at-home or in-office vision therapy. Our clinic’s eye doctor is Jesse Willingham, OD, a developmental optometrist (sometimes called a binocular vision specialist, neuro-optometrist or behavioral optometrist), who is residency-trained in vision therapy and rehabilitation.

“We get to the bottom of each patient’s specific issues and build a treatment plan to assess their individual goals,” Dr. Willingham says. “It’s not a one size fits all treatment plan; every individual is different.”

In true Southern fashion, we want to make sure that everyone is treated kindly and accommodated at our neurodiverse friendly eye center. Our doctor and staff are specially trained to help our neurodiverse community.  There are several visual problems that go hand and hand with other diagnoses, like autism, ADHD, dyslexia, Downs Syndrome, and more. The visual problem can make things harder, so we want to help alleviate that stress and improve lives. You can learn more about potential accommodations here. Let us know how to best meet your family’s needs.

Vision therapy helps children learn to focus

Our patients have called Dr. Jesse the “most caring doctor” they have experienced, “a gem,” and someone who “goes out of his way” to help. Dr. Jesse truly wants to help people with their vision care so that they can live their best lives, unimpeded by vision problems. He created Brighter Outlook Vision so that he could give his utmost to his Charleston neighbors through their eyesight and vision development, taking extra time to be able to listen and guide patients to their best vision.

We want to provide the best care possible to our patients, with their individual needs in mind. Insurance companies are often inconsistent when covering vision therapy, and dictate care to a degree harmful to the patient. They sometimes recommend treatments proven to be less effective before starting vision therapy or only cover a handful of the number of sessions needed to address most conditions, if they cover it at all. Our office is not in network with any insurance providers at this time. We will submit on your behalf for out-of-network reimbursement to your medical insurance provider through our partner, Reimbursify.

Most offices that take insurance have to rush patients in and out, but we schedule extra time so that patients can spend more one-on-one time with the eye doctor. Being a direct pay office allows us to personalize the care and ensure you get the best results and advice.
