What Myopia Management Looks Like at Brighter Outlook Vision

Myopia is increasing at an alarming rate with 1 in 3 people already diagnosed. Eyeglasses compensate for the blurry vision due to myopia. But glasses do not treat the underlying issue.

Myopia gets worse in nearly all kids, and as it does it can lead to dependency on thick glasses and put kids at higher risks for serious eye diseases like glaucoma, cataracts, and retinal detachments.

Treatments are available to slow down myopia’s progression. These treatments can minimize future eye health risks for your child.

Step One: Routine Eye Exam

Children should receive a routine eye exam each year to ensure their eyes are healthy. You can have your routine eye exam at your regular optometrist or at Brighter Outlook Vision.

An eye evaluation with a vision professional provides a comprehensive look at your child’s visual health, ensuring they’re ready to succeed in school and beyond.

A school or pediatrician’s vision screening is a great first step, but it’s just that—a screening. Screenings provide less than 4% of the eye tests needed to help children see and miss up to 75% of children with vision problems! These tests often miss critical details about how your child’s eyes work together, focus, and process visual information.

At BOV, your child is seen by a pediatric expert who specializes not just in myopia management, but fully functional vision. Dr. Jesse is a developmental optometrist who works with children and the unique vision challenges that come from modern living and increased school pressure.

Step Two: Free Myopia Consultation

If you have had your routine eye exam in the last 3 months, we offer a free myopia consultation at Brighter Outlook Vision. Dr. Jesse will use an optical biometer to accurately measure your child’s axial length, which is critical to providing appropriate care and monitoring. He will take additional tests to gauge where your child’s myopia is at and their future risk. Once we know more about what is going on with their vision, Dr. Jesse can share the options for the best way to protect your child’s lifelong vision.

We use a holistic approach to vision and can use various means to treat your child’s myopia. We can utilize one or a combination of the following:
👓 Glasses
👀 Atropine eye drops
👉 Soft contact lenses

Step Three: Myopia Management Program

Each Myopia Management Program is two years long and based on a proprietary clinical protocol based on the treatment of thousands of children nationwide. We use that as the basis in addition to the unique risk factors of your child to ensure they are provided with a customized treatment over those two years.

It includes yearly eye exams, quarterly myopia change evaluations, contact lense fitting if necessary, and all materials, plus the expertise of our vision specialist, Dr. Jesse Willingham, who really knows this disease and will be able to track and can pivot and individualize as needed.

With Myopia Management, we are not passively waiting to see if it is okay and hoping for the best, but taking active steps for a better, healthier life.

Step Four: Back to Regular Care!

After your child’s myopia treatment is underway, your regular optometrist will continue to provide ongoing eye care and eyeglasses for your child, similar to how a general dentist and orthodontist work together.
